I see, will that help the widows/widowers of the V-22 crashes? Or how 'bout the Guard troops on the C-23? A little bit of money isn't going to fix the Army's problems, either. (There's no mention of a concurrent pay raise for higher grades which, on a percentage basis, is always fatter for them). Services are going to have to provide incentives for furthering one's educational pursuits, since the vast majority of troops will leave the service after their first enlistment, particularly from specialties with technical skills germain to private sector jobs. The "slugs" will take care of themselves, for they are retained in much the same manner as they were in my day. I fail to see why there is so much emphasis on active duty manpower levels. There are literally thousands of retired military officers and sergeants that can be recalled into active duty, along with soldiers who are on inactive reserve or PALACE CHASE programs. There is no war going on, so what's the panic? I believe another hefty round of base closings will "provide" the manpower required. The military can "grow" pretty quickly in an emergency, and with the current level of surveillance and intelligence operations in use, it's not likely that another Pearl Harbor will occur. Another waste of troops is this NATO contingent crap. It's OUR military, not some global police force. We are creating way too many taskings which exceed both prudent American military employment, and our criteria for establishing what is in the best interests of the U.S. Eliminate those taskings, and you'll have a sufficient force structure to protect the U.S. against all enemies...Foreign and Domestic.
