Bishop’s Stortford earliest significant history is that of a Roman settlement on Stane Street, the road that now the path of the A120 between St Albans and Colchester traced. After the fall of the Roman Empire, a new Saxon settlement known as Esterteferd created, named after the family Estere the country and the “Ford” in hand. In 1060, it was purchased by William, the then Bishop of London, so it is known as Bishop’s Stortford since.

Mentioned in the Domesday Book as having a population of 120, the city continued to grow through the ages as a result of the access road and leads to a weekly market for farmers to sell their products. The River Landfill, unusually named after the city was made navigable in 1769 and rail travel arrived in the city in 1842.

The city has undergone a mini-expansion in recent times, with large-scale housing projects known as Bishop’s Park & ??St. Michaels Mead, in addition to the demolition and regeneration of the multi-storey car park and the old yard in the center of the city

Bishop’s Stortford has six suburbs consisting of Bishop’s Park, St Michaels Mead, Snowley, Thorley, Thorley Park & ??Havers, plus the villages of Little Hallingbury and Takeley.

Recently a campaign was launched for Bishop’s Stortford to attack the command of Essex County Council instead of East Herts Council.

Some interesting facts about Bishop’s Stortford.

The Bishop’s Stortford Mural shows the history of the city from the Ice Age to 1990 and hangs in the great hall at Rhodes Centre. Consisting of seven panels of a total of 28 feet (8.4 meters) by five feet (1.5 meters) high, shows the buildings and architectural details, the modes of transport, trees and a number of local personalities. The panels of the Mural was done with 142 residents, including members of the embroiderers’ Guild, the Town Women’s Guild, the members of the church groups in Bishop’s Stortford and Little Hallingbury, schoolchildren and many needle workers personally known to the sponsor. Buildings were often used by people with a connection with them.

The Bishop’s Stortford Arsonist . In the spring of 1825, a number of buildings in Bishop’s Stortford on fire and caused great alarm in the city. A committee was formed and a 500 reward offered for information about the arsonist. A number of threatening letters were soon receive a warning stating that “Stortford be determined in the ashes.” Thomas Rees was arrested and found guilty on the charge of sending the letters, but not arson. He was eventually transported to Australia as a convict.

River Deposit is unusually named after the city, not the city after the river. In the early cartographers came to the city in early 1600, they reasoned that the city should be named after Ford took over the Stort and the river was the Deposit. It has ever been since. Until then, there was no official name for the river.
